DJ dies as harrowing footage shows stage collapse in windstorm at Atmosphere EDM Festival.
DJ Kaleb Freitas, 30, was performing when the stage came crashing down. Falling debris struck his head, and he was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Harrowing video footage from the Atmosphere Festival shows chaos at the festival as heavy winds and storm clouds loomed over.
Some of the festival goers, wearing summer attire despite the cloudy skies and heavy winds, didn’t really understand the gravity of the situation; they can be heard laughing and joking about the stage collapse in the video posted on social media.
But in a short while, there was complete chaos at the location. Almost 5,000 people were present at the event at the time of the accident, which aggravated a stampede near the stage as individuals fled in groups.
“It was madness. The scale of the tragedy could have been far worse. Things were flying all over the place. There was panic,” said Sergio Bandoca, one of the people in charge of the exhibition center.
Soon after the news of the DJ’s death made headlines, the fans poured their hearts out with condolence messages for the lost soul.
“A beautiful day, everyone happy … and in a matter of seconds everything changes, only those who where there know how horrible it was,” one festival attendee wrote.
Freitas’ Facebook page has been flooded with messages.
